Students will read/analyze “Maus I: A Survivor’s Tail” with a focus on visual argumentation, symbolic value of ethnic groups, and comparison between text and visual cells


Students are to respond to the following questions:

  1. Look up “black humor.” Discuss whether you think Spiegelman makes use of it, and if so, how he does it. Use textual evidence.
  2. How do drawings convey complexity through shadowing, close-ups, and the use of contrast and line?
